Scary

I was driving back from walmart this morning. There are several apartments right on the corner of a busy intersection that I cross to get into my neighborhood. As I was sitting at the light, I saw a young boy probably about 3 slowly walking across the lawn of the apartments toward the street by himself! The light turned green and I started to drive slowly, still watching him come closer and closer to the street. I drove past and saw no adults at all. He was about 6 feet from the street now and I was about to make a u-turn and honestly had no plan after that since I couldn't just leave my kids in a running car and there was not much time anyway for me to get out and stop this little boy. Suddenly to my relief I saw a man run over to the boy and grab him up. That man wasn't paying enough attention and the boy had wandered off. That could really happen to any of us- even the super vigilant, and it scares me to death. It's just a reminder of how fast things can happen and how quickly kids can slip out of your sight. One glance away at a busy mall, one second of non-attention near the street, one minute alone by a swimming pool...it's enough to drive a person crazy with worry. There's a balance to strike between careful supervision and just plain faith.
