Bookcases

There is a problem with store-bought bookcases. Every bookcase I have ever bought, no matter what size it is, has too few shelves. These bookcases would be great for someone who has 200 books that are 16 inches or taller. However, when I place my average-sized books on the shelves, I end up with a lot of wasted space. Right now as I type, I am looking at a bookcase that is 48 inches tall and has two shelves. Ridiculous. My solution? I have asked my talented husband to make more shelves. Cody is really amazing when it comes to making things or fixing things around the house. Shelves aren't that tricky...he has designed some incredibly intricate things in the past. Once I got an old metal sewing machine from my grandmother that was completely uneven on the bottom. It was designed to fit into some cabinet (which I did not have). Cody designed a wooden base that fit the details of the bottom of that sewing machine perfectly. It was a complicated thing, but he is so exact in his design and implementation. That's just the way he is, and it's why he makes such a good structural engineer. I can't begin to imagine designing a 30 story building. There are all kinds of factors to accomodate and the mathematical equations are beyond my understanding. Math was always my weakest subject. I'm really not even qualified to keep score for Scrabble. So, nobody will be asking me to create a building that will not fall apart and crush everyone inside anytime soon. And that's okay with me. Although, I probably could design some practical bookcases.

That's so true about bookcases.....adjustable shelving is so worth it when you can find them. And as to Cody's mathmatical abilities, he was a great live-in human calculator for me. I hardly ever had to figure anything very complicated--would just ask him and he could figure it in his head in the time it would take me to go find the calculator! I miss that still!
