Small Things, Big Pain

Why is it that the smallest injuries can hurt so badly? I burned the roof of my mouth tonight eating lasagna. It is sore constantly, and especially hurts if I eat anything. I think I can even feel some of the skin dangling loose. The worst part is that I had to skip eating cheetos tonight because I knew those rough chips would aggravate my mouth. The same thing goes for paper cuts. So small, yet so painful. Would you believe I actually paper cut my eye once? I know it sounds crazy. It happened when I was teaching. I somehow slashed a paper through the air and it all happened so quickly I didn't even have a chance to blink. The edge of the paper cut my eye. It barely touched my eye, and thankfully no major damage was done. It took some time to get over though. Now compare these small injuries to when Cody nearly cut off the end of his foot with a chainsaw. He says that didn't hurt at all. Well, it did hurt later- much later, and it did take a while to heal. But at the time of the injury, no pain. That was quite an event. Ava was only about 6 months old. Cody had the week off from work. He had decided to do a little tree trimming, with the chainsaw, while I was away at a Bible study. I knew that he was planning on using the chainsaw, so I told him before I left, "Please don't use the chainsaw while in the tree since no one will be home, and that is sort of dangerous." Lo and behold, I get home from Bible study to find a note taped to the garage door. It said something like, "I cut my foot with the chainsaw. I'm OK!!! But I think I need stitches, so I am gone to the hospital. I'll call you later." I read it a few times, letting it all sink in gradually. My initial panic subsided. Then, I walked inside the house to find a completely blood-soaked towel next to Cody's sneaker which was sawed almost completely in half. The panic was back. I started calling hospitals. I called Cody's parents. I called the church. Finally, Cody called me to tell me he was at Presby Dallas. I took Ava back to a friend at the church, and my friend Dan came with me to the hospital. It was a long day involving a surgery, going to pick up Ava, and finally getting everyone back home. For the record, Cody says that he technically respected my request because he was not in the tree when the accident happened. He was on the ladder.
