Don't Poop in My Yard

I happened to glance out the front window after lunch today and see a man casually puffing his cigarette while waiting for his dog to finish pooping in our front yard. I could see the man had no way to pick up the poop, and I felt extremely irritated. My kids play in the front yard. I don't want dog poop out there. So I did something that still surprises me a little. I opened the front door and called out, "Do you need a plastic bag?" He replied, "Yes M'am, I do." So I grabbed one from the hall closet and took it out to him, came right back in and closed the door. And as I walked inside I said, "My children play in this yard so I like to keep it clean." I've never seen the man before but he must live somewhere in the neighborhood since he was walking his dog here. I think it takes a lot of nerve to let your dog poop in other people's yards like that. Of all the houses, too, it would be mine. I have, as many know, a strong dislike for dogs. I don't want to touch them, or be near them, and especially don't want their poop in my yard. Yuck!

Wanna know what my mom's neighbor did about that? She put up signs - two of them on either side of her front yard - telling people that her daughters played in the yard and could people please pick up their dog droppings! I think the signs may be a little overkill, but I completely understand the sentiment.

Good for you. I've been in a situation before walking my parents dogs where I took a plastic bag, used it, and wasn't prepared when I needed a 2nd (or 3rd!) bag. For me it feels awful to stand there while the dog does its business and then try to scurry away before anyone sees me. I have gone back to pick it up later, but, I confess, not every time.
I recall you having a big dog when you lived in Abilene. I wasn't aware you had developed such a strong aversion to dogs. I'm with you on keeping the yard clean though.

You had a dog when we were in high school. I don't remember you hating him! The puppy, that is. Didn't your family have another dog? The one that attacked your cat? I can understand hating that one! Allison

I understand not like the dog droppings but not hating the dog. Dogs are such an amazing companion and stress reliever--plus kids adore them and it so sweet to watch dogs be loved by a child. Some article I read said dogs help people live longer. I get sort of irritated with dog droppings in the yard - probably more so when Kimber gets out in the yard more but in the summer it does make good fertilizer. Just a way to put a positive spin on things.
