Nuclear Weapons

How's that for a weighty topic? I watched the State of the Union Address tonight. I don't usually watch it, but for some reason tonight I was highly interested to see how Bush would present himself. There were many things I could have chosen to write about, but one thing stuck out in my mind. There was a mention of preventing certain countries from aquiring nuclear weapons. This got me to wondering just who does have nuclear weapons. I looked it up and found this cnn.com site that had the info I wanted. The US, United Kingdom, France, Russia, China, India, and Pakistan are declared nuclear nations. Of those 7, all but India and Pakistan have signed a Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty. Then there is Isreal which is an "undeclared" nuclear nation. I guess that means they have them but aren't admitting it. Then there is a list of suspected nuclear nations that includes Libya, Iraq, Iran, and North Korea. This means they probably do not currently have nuclear weapons, but do have the desire, money, means, etc to build a nuclear program. They are probably trying to develop nuclear weapons. Personally, I wish NOBODY had any nuclear weapons and that they were never invented in the first place. I don't think about it very often, which is why I wanted to learn more about it tonight. It doesn't keep me awake at night wondering if (or when) the world is going to blow each other to bits. At the same time, I do find it slightly disconcerting. What I find amazing is just how quickly mankind has advanced its weaponry from sticks and rocks, to swords, to guns, to missiles, to nuclear warheads. Good grief. What is next for crying outloud? How much further (and how quickly) can we create even more deadly ways of killing? There's something to be said for the ingenuity of man, and many good things have come from that. But so many bad things have come as well. If I think about it too long, I'll get depressed.
