OUCH

I had a check up at the doctor today which required me to have blood drawn at the lab. After the needle was out, the technician slaped two large pieces of some kind of industrial strength masking tape over a cotton ball on my arm. They did this several times when I was in the hospital to give birth as well. All I can say is...what a stupid idea! It hurts SO BAD pulling those pieces of tape from my arm. Cody thinks it would be better to rip them off quickly, but I honestly think I would faint from the shock of pain. I take them off slowly and gently, along with any arm hair that happens to be trapped under their forceful stickiness. The whole time I am removing them I talk on and on about how painful and stupid it is to put this horrible tape on my arm. Tonight, a plan finally came to me! Next time I have blood drawn, I am going to stop the technician from putting the tape on me. In fact, I plan to bring my own large but regular strength bandaid and give it to them to use in securing thier cotton ball. And I won't take no for an answer. I'm telling you, never again will I tear this awful tape from my poor arm. Starting today, I will be proactive about the health of the skin on my arm. Seriously, it is finally sinking in that I have some control over what happens to me at the hospital. For years I have bowed my head and just accepted whatever doctors, nurses, or technicians see fit. But it's my body and I do have a say over what happens to it. And I say NO MORE SUPER STICKY RIP MY ARM TO PIECES TAPE.

I had some blood work done today and had to have my blood drawn - weird coincidence - but they put just a regular bandaid over the cotton ball. That's what you should request!

You are so right! You are your own best advocate and you can tell the nurse what you prefer. I even discovered while I was in the hospital that you can request they not come in your room all night long!! I too had to tell them to switch tapes, they do have paper tape that is not so sticky. Sorry you had such a hard time.
