I am totally curious about foundations tonight. And I want to hear from everybody!
Here's the deal: I had to buy foundation today for the first time in a couple of years. I had accidentally bought two of my foundation a long time ago and it takes me a long time to use it up. So today I finally had to buy more. I went to the store only to discover that they no longer make my particular kind of foundation. Ack! There was nothing even close to it. Apparently that brand had completely revolutionized their foundation offerings. So I wandered the make-up isles searching for a new brand and a new foundation. Not easy! I was wondering at the time what brand and style of foundation all my friends use and if anyone could recommend a good one. I had to go ahead and buy one, so it's a little late now. But I still want to know!
(I purchased Almay Truly Lasting Color 16 Hour Make-Up.)
I happen to prefer a foundation that either says "continuous wear" or has some hours on it like "16 hour" or 18 hour." These foundations tend to be a bit thicker than the regular style and they cover better in my opinion. I always have to buy the next to the lightest shade available by the way. I have nearly black hair, but my skin is fairly light. I always wonder about those darker shades of foundation- the ones darker than ivory, and think- who gets these? They seem so dark! How could they blend into anyone's complexion. So I am also curious- what shade of foundation does everyone get. Of course, I realize everyone has different shades of skin color, but when I am standing there looking at the available shades, anything darker than ivory just looks so very dark. That is probably because I am imagining putting it on my own face and how awful it would look.
And my next question is: How do you apply your foundation? Sponge, fingers, something else?
I use my fingers. But, I don't put foundation all over my face. I only put it on areas that need some camouflage (read: gotta cover the acne) or places that need a little evening out of the skin tone. I guess it blends pretty well between the areas where I put the foundation and the areas without. Probably that is because I dust my entire face with powder after applying foundation. Do you guys cover your entire face or only certain areas?
So tell me all your foundation secrets!

I am about to be in your shoes.....I've worn Cover Girl Fresh Look foundation for the past several years (shade: buff beige, though my skin is fairly light too - the lighter shades looked too white). Alas, they've discontinued it. I was able to find it on eBay for a while, but I'm pretty sure that option is over now.
I use my fingers to apply - though I wish I had learned to use a sponge - it would be much cleaner! And I do apply all over my face, but then also dust powder over my whole face.
So, there. I have no more foundation secrets.
fun post becky! i usually just wear a pressed powder as a "base" or "foundation" but when i do wear foundation i use mary kay medium coverage and i wear beige 300 (their lightest beige) in the summers and ivory 200 (their darkest ivory) in the winters. i use my fingers and i put it all over my face except under my eyes, where i'd just use a concealer, usually ivory. i was always taught that the sponges soak up too much of the foundation so that's why i use fingers. i, too, dust on some powder after the foundation layer, before the colors go on. good luck!
I used to use Mary Kay as well, but now I use the Bare Minerals where I put the foundation on with a make up brush. I love it! I don't get my fingers dirty anymore and it actually does cover well. I feel like I am painting my face. I use the Light shade. Apparently, if I ever get sun in the summer I am supposed to use Fairly Light. We shall see - I will probably just stick to light.
What I use probably wouldn't work for you since you like the thick stuff. I use Cover Girl tinted moisturizer in "light to medium" shade. I like it because it is a moisturizer, spf 15 sunscreen and light foundation all in one. I still use a regular moisturizer underneath it, though. And I apply it with a sponge. I like the light stuff so I love this foundation. It evens out my skin tone without looking cakey. And for areas that are hard to cover or need more coverage at times(acne, under eyes, etc.) I use a concealer that comes in a tube with a wand applicator and then I blend it with my finger. I finish with a little bit of powder.
I actually became a Mary Kay consultant a few years ago although I don't sell it for profit anymore. Here's the scoop: using a sponge may be neater for your fingers but they can harvest bacteria so if you use them you need to replace it (I would say a new one every week). I find that using my fingers helps me blend it in and leaves no "line" and as Irene said, the sponge soaks up a lot so you end up using less with your fingers.
Speaking of make up, I got this from a friend today:
ELF cosmetics has been bought out by
Nordstrom, so they are liquidating all of their ELF
for...$1!!
Go to eyeslipsface.com
Word is spreading fast, so go soon and shop big..many items are already out of stock.
I use Clinique. Before breastfeeding, I used Clarifying Makeup in Pure Ivory. Now that I'm breastfeeding, I have no moisture and I'm using Supermoisture Makeup in Linen. I usually take the lightest shade or the next to lightest. I also use my fingers and my whole face needs the makeup.
I started using BeautiControl several years ago when a friend of mine became a consultant. I use the Perfecting Wet/Dry Finish which is a foundation and powder in one. I use the N-3 which is the medium color in the neutral skin tone options. I apply it with the sponge that comes with it.
I used to use Clinique's Alabaster (the lightest one they have) foundation. I really liked it, but now I use BareMinerals light or fairly light makeup. I love it for the same reasons Lindsay mentioned!
I use Almay Smart Shade, light/medium. I like it better than anything I have ever used because it as it is so light in thickness. It goes on white and blends to your skin color. I put it on with my finger. I then cover with a pressed powder that matches.
I use Maybelline PureStay powder foundation because I am both cheap and lazy when it comes to makeup. I do have some actual foundation that I use if I need to cover something particualrly obvious, but I don't remember the brand and I'd have to walk all the way to the other side of the house to find it out, so you'll just have to live in suspense!
Well this is the one area where I completely splurge - I use Chanel. It's a bit pricey but I totally love it! Go to a Chanel counter and have them do your makeup - so much fun and you look so good when they're through.
Like Quad Squad, I too am very lazy with make-up. I use a pressed powder/foundation combo from Clinique. In winter, I used the lightest shade. In summer, I use the next shade darker. In the Philippines, I just don't wear make-up at all! :) I don't think I've used a liquid foundation since my wedding day... eyeshadow either.
But, seriously, give the pressed powder/foundation combo a try. It's easy, fast & covers great!
BARE ESCENTUALS!! OMG it is AWESOME!! I was skeptical about how well it would cover. It's better than any foundation I have ever used AND the BEST part is that you feel like you aren't wearing anything at all. You won't ever go back to creams and liquids once you try mineral makeup.
I realize this is VERY late, but for what it's worth... I use Bare Escentuals. I went from Cover Girl to this, just because I wanted to try something new. It is very different in that it is all powder, but I absolutely love it. The starter kit comes with it's own brushes and the ladies at ULTA are able to show you how to apply it or there is an instructional video in the packet as well. It lasts for at least 3-4 months at a time. I use the light and fairly light foundations with the "warm" blush and the mineral veil to finish off the look. Love it!
