Somehow our number has gotten off the "no call" list because we've been getting tons of sales calls lately. I just signed our number back up so hopefully they will end soon. I am awful at dealing with sales calls. First of all, I try not to be terribly rude, which is difficult. I don't like to interrupt people, but the problem is you absolutely must interrupt a sales call person because they talk on and on without pausing for air. I don't know how they do it. Maybe they have oxygen hooked directly to their bloodstream. I usually say, "I hate to interrupt, but I am not interested. Please don't call this number again." Then, I am met with all sorts of rude behavior from the salesperson. Some slam the phone down on me. Some say in a hateful voice, "We'll never call you again, don't worry!" Some refuse to believe that I am not interested and continue to hock their amazing deal. So my second plan of attack is to hang up the phone right after I answer if there is any delay in hearing a voice at the other end. Have you noticed how sales calls often begin after a short pause? Cody says this is because they are calling several numbers at once and it takes a moment for them to click over once they get a "live one." Unfortunately I am often not quick enough. So my third way of trying to get out of the uncomfortable sales call is by answering the question of "Is this Ms. (my last name)?" with "She's unavailable. May I take a message?" I know, it's totally wimpy, but sometimes I just don't feel like dealing with all the above things. But the problem is, many times the salesperson, upon hearing my response, will ask, "What is your relationship to Ms. (my last name) if I may ask?" And that just makes me so mad. Of course you may not ask! What kind of crazy person are you? You call a house as a perfect stranger, and without even giving your name, start to ask the person who answers the phone who exactly they are to the owners of the home as if it could possibly be any of your business at all???? WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE? I would never, EVER, call a person and upon hearing they are not home start quizzing the one who answered about who they are and why they are answering the phone of the person I am calling. Especially without even saying who I am. It just irritates the junk out of me. So, I've had to abandon this last method and go back to my "Sorry to interrupt you..." routine.
Oh I hate sales calls.

Casey is terrible at handling sales calls. I usually have to be the one to do it. Unfortunately, sometimes you have to ask to be taken off their call list in order for them to stop calling you. If you just hang up or ask to take a message they will probably try calling again. This is just my experience. Although, putting your number back on the do not call list should take care of most of them...unless you have a prior business relationship. But even then, you can still ask them not to call anymore.
Dan and I were just talking about this earlier today. I think we are going to have to add our name to the do not call list again also. He is much better about handling those calls than I am....
when I had a land line I also hung up if there was silence. I like your other strategy - they have a lot of nerve! I know I would hate having that job though...
We have had one call us for awhile now, and we just recognize the number on caller ID and not pick up. They called again last night immediately after I had put Caleb down for bed. That really ticked me off. Wake my kid up, and you're in trouble! So, I picked up the phone ready to give them a piece of my mind, but they had already hung up. Darn!
I always hang up when I hear a pause. But of course that does not fix the problem. If I do not hang up in time I just ask to take a message and of course they say no and quiz me on who I am. I just say I am busy. I need to get on the no call list.
Haha, we get a bunch of sales calls, it's ridiculous. My dad has come to the conclusion that after I leave for college, they're getting rid of the house phone all together. We all have cell phones, what's the point??
And my Nana's house phone gets them all the time, too. Luckily, my Nana likes to talk and within a 3 hour conversation tells the person calling her whole life story. (They usually don't call back, haha.)
I don't see the point in them either. If you let the phone ring continuously, the message is a bunch of beeping followed by a long dial tone... =/
It only serves to annoy us, I guess. :P
