Titanic

I read online today that the last American survivor of the Titanic died today at age 99. Not only was she the last living American survivor, but the last survivor to have memories of the event. She was 5 when it happened in 1912. There are only 2 survivors left now. Both live in England, and both were infants when the sinking occured. I can't imagine being present at such a monstrous event in history. That would certainly top anyone else's dinner table story, although I imagine it wouldn't be something one is eager to discuss. In fact, the article said this woman never wanted to talk about that experience. She lost many family members that day including a fraternal twin. I wonder if there will be a similar story almost 100 years from now about some current day tragedy. Perhaps it will be when the last survivor of the World Trade Center attacks dies. What other events do you think would be comparable?

I think the tragedy that the hurricanes brought this year will be talked about for a while. I'm not sure if it will equal that of the Titanic or 9/11, though.
