Novel Names

It really bugs me when I am reading a novel and one of the main characters has a name that I have never seen before and can't pronounce. Then my mind does a little jog over it every time I come to it, and I sort of blur past it. It becomes a stumbling block, a nuisance, a wall between me and the character. I read a book yesterday in which the female lead was named "Colquitt." What? When they referred to her occasionally as "Col" I breathed a sigh of relief and felt somewhat connected, but most of the time my eyes fogged over at "Colquitt" and I could never break through. This happened to me when I read the first Harry Potter book, too. "Hermione." I sort of glossed it into Herm-ee-ohn as I read. I guess I finally realized the correct pronunciation at the first movie! Maybe authors feel that part of the creative process is coming up with crazy names that will drive readers insane.
