1-800-imbored

I was thinking last night about something my friends and I used to do during the long summer days back in middle school. We would talk on the phone almost all day. It was hard to stay occupied from 8-5 while our parents were at work and we were home. This activity I recall (and I am embarrassed to admit this because it reveals how absolutely boring our lives must have been) was to place three way calls to various 1-800 numbers we found on products around the house. One of us would do the talking, and the other would just listen with the mute button pressed. I think I remember doing most of the talking. We called all kinds of random companies asking stupid questions and making ridiculous comments. You know, almost every product has a 1-800 number. We called the numbers off cleaning products, toiletries, and even the jars of spices in my mom's pantry. I still remember a conversation I had with a lady about some floor cleaner. I told her it had messed up my hardwood floors (I doubt I even knew what a hardwood floor was then). She replied matter of factly that the product was not intended for hardwood floors and it says so on the bottle. Oh. I couldn't think of anything else to say then. Boy did I feel dumb. I would have to choose my fake complaints more carefully. My friends and I would laugh and laugh after these calls were over. The reason I remembered this is because I saw the 1-800 number on my face cleanser last night. So there it is- confessions of a bored middle school nerd.

Isn't it funny the things we did as middle schoolers! We did not call 1-800 numbers but we loved to call friends and play pranks on them. That was always fun to us. I guess in today's era, you can't do that since everyone has caller ID. I am sure they have found other things to do to fill their time!
