Semantics

This entry is not about the pope. It is not about the comments he made regarding Islam. Instead, it is about how to say "sorry" without actually admitting any wrong-doing. Ava does it ALL the time, and I thought it was funny to see that she and the pope can word an apology the same way. The pope says he is deeply sorry about the angry reaction to his comments about Islam. Note: he didn't say he is sorry he said the comments, because that would be admission of a mistake. He is sorry that people didn't respond the way he wanted them to respond. When Ava gets in trouble and I tell her she needs to apologize to Mama she often says, "I'm sorry you got so angry, Mama."
People apologize in this way all the time, and to my ears it is such a blaring un-apology that not apologizing at all might have been the better choice.

sounds like my nephew (age 2.5), who apologizes not for what he did, but for getting caught. "I'm sorry you caught me spitting." I think these semantics really speak to how intelligent these kids are!
