the hospital

I'd like to receive some training sometime on pastoral care in the hospital setting. I already know a few things, mainly, listening is better than talking. I also know better than to assure people that they are going to be fine. I've always felt drawn to visiting people in the hospital (even as a girl) and it is something I could see myself doing more of when I have more time. Right now, it's tough since I've got two little ones. However, today my mother-in-law came over and I was able to visit my neighbor in the hospital. I was so glad that I went. I didn't know how my visit would be received, but it was obvious that she was glad I came. I felt inadequate though in my ability to be a comfort to her. I did get to pray over her. And anyone reading this, please lift up a short prayer on behalf of my neighbor (God knows who she is) for healing. Thanks.

Becky,
Steve and I attended a seminar last weekend by Lifeline Chaplaincy and it was good, but you summed up what we learned in 17 hours of training. The key is listening and just being a presence. I am sure your neighbor was encouraged just that you would take the time to come see her. Lifeline is here in Dallas and is a church of Christ organization. I will try and remember to let you know the next time I hear they are hosting a training seminar.
Blessings on your weekend.
