Several people have asked about our book club's recent phone conversation with Tom Zoellner, co-author of An Ordinary Man. A few months ago, through a series of events, we became in contact with him. We ended up reading his book and then having a speaker-phone question and answer session with him at our next book club meeting. Tom was a remarkably nice guy. We spoke with him for about an hour and were able to gain an even deeper insight into the book and the story behind it. I could tell that he was extremely intelligent, but also a down-to-earth kind of guy that is probably fun to hang out with. I think we book club girls were kind of nervous, at least I know I was and Amberly said she was also. It was exciting for us to speak with the author of the book we had just read, but intimidating. I think Tom's demeanor did a lot to put us at ease. Now I am wanting to read his latest book The Heartless Stone. Tom is a really good author. His style is easy to read and he lays out a story extremely well. He does his research and knows his topic inside and out. I know this latest book deals with a difficult topic. I know it will affect me emotionally to hear the story behind the diamond industry...how many people are exploited. But I am ready to take it on.
Interestingly, our book club is most likely going to have a chat with another author, too. Our current book Snow Flower and the Secret Fan is written by Lisa See. Mrs. See has been gracious to answer my email requesting a question/answer session with her as well. The plan for now is a speaker phone chat at our next meeting. I have to say I am pleasantly surprised by how accessible many authors are. I think it is wonderful that they take the time to connect with their audiences.
