I was rocking Lucas this afternoon as Ava and Nate played with various toys around me and suddenly I became aware of the song Ava was singing. I heard a faint, "da da da da..standin' in the need of prayer...da da da da...standin' in the need of prayer." My ears perked, and so did my curiosity. I listened carefully. "Da da da da...it's me oh Lord, standin' in the need of prayer. Not my sister not my brother but it's me oh Lord, standin' in the need of prayer," sung perfectly in tune. Had I been somehow transported, unaware, to a gospel meeting? How in the world does Ava know this song? So I asked her. And she told me it was on the CD we had listened to that morning, many hours earlier. It was? I didn't remember it. It was the first time we had ever listened to this particular CD. I got up and checked the jewel case and sure enough in clear letters next to #17 was "Standing in the Need of Prayer."
This is a new set of 3 CDs by the way, that are so awesome. 102 Bible Songs. There are about 33 or so songs on each CD. What I really like is that along with the usual children's songs there are hymns (sung by children and jazzed up with music). I ordered it from Current Catalog (of all places) but you can check the website of the company that makes it: Twin Sisters Productions. They have other types of music for kids there also. I am wary of buying children's music because sometimes the quality is so low. Poor singing and lousy electronic music. This CD set is really good quality and the range of songs is impressive.

I have thought before that it is such a shame that generations younger than us may not know some of the greatest hymns that we can all sing from memory - I hope I can teach my kids some also!
By the way, if you want another great kids CD, my friend, TJ (his wife, Holly, was my college roommate) has just put out a second kids CD called Playground: I Want to Shine. The first one was really great (Playground: A Place I Know) and I'm sure this one will be also - it hasn't arrived in the mail yet so I haven't had a chance to listen to it yet. You can get them both at Parable.com - or you can listen to mine first.
I love to listen to Ava sing in the car--or anytime of course! Thankfully I remembered the Current sale notice you sent me before retreat and it was over yesterday. So last night before I went to bed, I ordered the Kid's Favorites set and then decided on the Bible ones, too and went back and ordered those as well. So glad I did. Ava had told me recently I needed to get some kids cds for the car--and it will be nice on the car trips back to our house for that hour. And to have here as well when they are at Grandparents Camp!
My mom bought me the Wee Sing Bible Songs tape when Caleb was born as well as another Sunday School songs cd. They are both really good. We listen to the tape in the car quite a bit. I love the old kid songs we used to sing!
For some reason just the other day I told someone that I wonder how long it would be before our children/teens would not know the great hymns. While I am all for new worship songs, I hope we will always keep singing the old songs as well. They don't sing the old songs but Jana Alayara and Mary Rice Hopkins have great children's music. I am glad that Ava is inheriting your gift of music!
