Tonight I ordered the first two lesson and theory books in the Alfred series of piano lessons for beginners. I've been meaning to do this for a while because long ago I told myself that I would give Ava piano lessons after she turned 5. I figure once ballet ends in April, it will be a good time to begin a weekly lesson with her. It will give her a fun activity to do this summer, and a good start on understanding music should she ever decide to pursue it. Here is the weird thing. I have to keep reminding myself that I am qualified to do this. I mean, I did get a music education degree and teach elementary music for 5 years. I keep thinking- Oh, I need to sign Ava up for piano lessons...wait a minute! I am a music teacher. I can do this! Why pay someone else when I am perfectly capable?
Of course, should she really take off and desire a decade of lessons then I might need to pass her onto a more experienced piano teacher after the first few years. I am aware of my limitations when it comes to the piano. Especially since I have not really played since college! And college, unfortunately, was a looooong time ago.

One of my life regrets is that I did not keep up my piano playing (2 years in the 4th and 5th grades) and can no longer play. I keep saying I should take lessons but not having a piano at home it would not be real helpful. I have considered asking for a keyboard for birthday or Christmas. I might just have to do that. Hope you and Ava have fun playing together.
How fun! I have the same thoughts, but as I took lessons as a kid and then had two years of piano in college, I look back and think I can do it too! I want to start Caleb at some point too. I loved my piano lessons! And those Alfred books are great!
I was recently given a piano and asked my mom to unearth all my old piano books (even the early beginner ones!) for a refresher. I'm looking forward to picking it all back up 25+ years later!
I have always wanted to learn to play the piano. My best friend growing up was really great at playing the piano (still is - she has a master's in music from Boston University and now sings for the Ft. Worth Opera), and I would watch her play all the time. She actually taught me Fur Elise (one of my favorites) which I memorized, since I can't read music.
Emma has asked to take piano lessons for the past 2 years, and I've held her off. I just didn't know any piano teachers... until now! Let me know if you want another pupil! (Maybe I could watch and learn also!)
