Books

It's no secret...I love books. I buy them (can hardly resist buying them), check them out from the library, love to have them on shelves surrounding me or laying beside the bed, like the way they feel, love the words and ideas they contain, have a stack a mile high of ones I plan to read sometime soon. And while I love books dearly, I readily admit that not all books are very good. In fact, there are a ton of average and even terrible books out there. I know because I have read a bunch of them. But every now and then, there is a gem. Sometimes I stumble upon a book that touches my heart, or mind, or both in a special life-changing way. Sometimes I fall in love with a book. There's a difference between loving books in general and being in love with a specific book. Right now I'm in love with the book Same Kind of Different As Me. I'm not really supposed to say that right now because it happens to be our book club choice this month and we don't reveal how well we like it until the night of the meeting (which hasn't happened yet.) Since my fellow book club members read my blog, I just spilled a tiny secret about my love for this book. I bet they'll forgive me.

I'm curious. And I am always looking for a good book to read. So, if you will take the time to comment, I would love to know 3 of your most loved books. Here are three of mine:
Beloved by Toni Morrison
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
The Listening Book by Mathieu

Have you ever read The Mark of the Lion series by Francine Rivers? It's a fictional story set in first century. There are three books and they are so good.

Jenn- I actually considered listing A Voice in the Wind as one of my most loved books. That IS a good trilogy (except the last book is not up to par in my opinion.)

Well, you probably already know mine:
Pride and Prejudice by J. Austen
One Hundred Years of Solitude by G. Marquez
Life of Pi by Y. Martel
...although there are so many I could put in that third spot.

Rachel, I almost listed Life of Pi third also...it's one of my faves. I need to re-read it soon.

Emma by Jane Austen

Les Miserables by Victor Hugo

Well, I have been searching for a new book to read for a couple of weeks now. And thought I would find your recommendations from 2008 you wrote up. Will find it and maybe get your advice from what I think I would like. Then go check something out of your library! I started Time Traveler's Wife in Round Rock as I found it on Lauren's shelf but couldn't really get into it.....did I not give it enough time? Did only read the first few pages.

Here are 3 of my favorites:

1. Maggie Now by Betty Smith. It's out of print, but if you're library is older they'll probably have it.

2. A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry. I read this last month and it is beautiful, but very depressing. The ending made me mad and just didn't make a lot of sense.

3. Dragon Seed by Pearl S. Buck. I think it is better than A Good Earth. Plus it was made into a movie back in the day with Katherine Hepburn playing the lead female (Chinese) character. I would love for it to be remade now, they took out a a couple of explicit parts, which kinda changed the story.

Two thimbs way up for both Pride and Prejudice and The Mark of the Lion trilogy! Thanks so much Becky for insiting I read the first Lion book!

So I am stating that those are two of my favorits but not putting them in my list of three! I'm cheating!

1. The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield
2. The Fitzwilliam Darcy Gentleman trilogy (starts with An Assembly Such as This) by Pamela Aidan
3. The Uglies trilogy (starts with Uglies) by paul Westerfeld

Okay I really cheated becasue two of mine are trilogies, but they're REALLY good. Especially the first two and especially if you're a fan of Pride and Prejudice!
