I read an interesting article in the newspaper the other day. It was about a woman who petitioned a local school board to allow her daughter to wear her uniform shirt untucked, though the school policy was to require shirts to be tucked in. She fought and fought for her daughter's right to wear her shirt untucked, citing Christian religious beliefs as the cause of this petition. She used this quote from the Bible as her offense:
"I also want women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or expensive clothes" 1 Timothy 2:9
She claimed that it was immodest for her 9 year old daughter to wear her shirt tucked in because it showed her behind. It turns out that the school board does make exceptions to those who cite "religious beliefs" as their reason for not complying with the dress code. Several of the board members said that they were also Christians and that the 1 Timothy verse may be interpreted in a wide number of ways by Christians. They saw nothing wrong with tucked in shirts, but granted her daughter the right to wear her shirt untucked. The woman was so happy to have won her case before the board. And when asked if she attends church she replied that she does not because she can't afford a nice enough dress to wear.
Um, wait a second. Didn't that verse say something about expensive clothes?
ARGH!!!! It gets really old when people are lugging around scriptures trying to prove their own opinions while ignoring what they don't want to read into it! And it especially gets old when "Christians" don't have the commitment to meet together with the body of believers, but they do have time to argue day and night about whether or not shirts should be tucked in, as if that is the most important thing in the universe.

and someone made a comment in the letters to the editor that the girl had braided hair! LOL did not see that, but I take their word for it.
haha. now that i think about it, YOU'RE RIGHT! the girl did have braided hair in the photo that accompanied the story. can't believe i missed that. just makes it all the more crazy, huh?
I think the newspaper was purposely (although subtly) exposing her hypocrisy. Crazy. And I would like to know what uniformed skirt, pants or shorts are really so indecent that they require having a shirt fall down over them to cover the rear? Really.
