Landscaping 101

I'm the first to admit yard work is difficult, tiring, expensive, and often overwhelming.  So I can understand why plenty of people have difficulty preparing a yard worthy of the cover of Southern Living magazine.  That doesn't make it any less funny to me when I spot little landscaping uh-ohs around my neighborhood.  I get a bit of a kick out of them.  So, a few days ago after deciding to walk to Ava's school to pick her up, I grabbed my camera.  All of these photos were taken on the short walk to Ava's school.  Let me present:  my neighborhood.

The boys and I heading out on our adventure.  Yes, Lucas is holding a pink poodle.  Let's move on.
I see a lot of this in my neighborhood.  Bare, blank, concrete slabs.  It's better than trying and failing, I guess.  But a few plants wouldn't hurt.

See what a difference a few plants make!  Of course, I think they would look better if they were actually planted...in the ground.  Those black containers are merely for getting the plant from the store to the house.  They were never intended as permanent yard fixtures.

Terracotta is an improvement, I guess.  But let's talk about scale shall we?  Those tiny plants in those tiny pots aren't doing much for your bare concrete slab problem.

A brief change of subject.  This is something I like to call "Crepe Murder."  It's a widespread problem that creates thick bases on a crepe myrtle tree with tons of tiny stick branches on top...when they eventually grow out that is.  Until then, it is just an eyesore.

This is the evil, unexplained mound o' ivy.  Maybe it slowly devoured the third tree that used to be in this yard.  Maybe it's just there for decoration.  But whatever its purpose, at least there's 4 square yards less to mow, right?

Speaking of less to mow.  It's popular to replace grass with rocky areas that require less water and care.  There's kind of a right and wrong way to do this.  Above would be the wrong way.

I am not a huge fan of perfectly manicured rectangular bushes in front of a house.  Especially when in front of them is another perfectly manicured rectangle standing all alone.

I suppose one could just give up completely and let nature take its course.  There is a house in there somewhere.

This makes me laugh! But I likely have one of those yards that you would photograph. My co-worker laughs at me - I'd plant silk trees if I could get by with it.

Hilarious. I notice that kind of stuff too.

"crepe murder" really makes me angry....it is so ugly!!!

I'm working to get my boxy bushes down from in front of my house.....prickly holly bushes 5 feet tall are tricky to cut down....but I really want them gone!!!

Houses with no bushes at all hiding their concrete slabs make me hurt. I just want to go there covertly under the cover of darkness and plant some bushes for them! So far I have restrained myself.
