Cody was out of town all weekend on a father/son trip with Nate and some church friends. They rode with other people, so Cody's truck was in the driveway for a few days non-stop. This morning, he called from work to ask if Lucas and I had been in his truck over the weekend. We hadn't. He said that somebody had been looking through his truck because his CD holder/visor was flipped down, the glove compartment was open, and several items were scattered about the seat. I was shocked! I have no idea how the truck was broken into, or when it happened. Nothing seemed to be missing, though, so I was glad about that.
My short lived happiness was shattered when Cody asked if I had noticed the garage door open at any time over the weekend. He mentioned that one of the items scattered in the seat was the garage door opener. That's when it hit me that whoever had broken into the truck had easy access to enter our house. That's a scary thought. Thankfully, these thieves seemed more interested in an easy shake down of a parked car than anything more serious. But I can't help but think about how vulnerable I had been without even knowing it.
Although, I was not as vulnerable as it may seem because I did do something the two nights Cody was away that I usually don't do. I locked the door that leads from the house into the garage. I don't even know what led me to do it, because it was a nearly subconscious decision. It just felt like I should. And now that I know someone might have been able to get into the garage it makes me thankful that I had that small urge and listened to it.
Of course, that would not have been much help during the day, or if someone was determined to enter. And this incident has made me rethink some safety issues around the house. I'm not afraid, just mindful...and that is a big difference.

Wow. Sorry someone rummaged through Cody's car. That does make you think about things. We have the same issue with locking our back door (to the garage). I have heard that most people don't lock it either. But we're trying to get into the habit of doing it all the time too.
Hey...what did you do with The Weekly Bookworm? I miss your reviews!
Glad all is well and you and your family are safe.

A couple of years ago, we had some one lodge something in the garage door when the trash was taken out. They came back several hours later. My purse had been left in the van in the garge, The took it, and used my debit cards and my id. They left the van a mess. Now we lock the door going into the garage every night, and now have a way to lock the door down from the inside. It was scary and really shook us up. I am glad they didn't steal anything, sorry you have lost your peace of mind.
That is so scary! I can't believe that happened. We only lock our door in the garage at night, since we have a hard time keeping up with keys :(. We may have to rethink that.
