The Library

I took Ava to the library today for the first time. I gave her my old "weekly reader" tote bag that must be over two decades old. Does anyone remember that book club called weekly reader? I think it used to be popular when I was growing up. Anyway, that library was a hub of activity. The place was PACKED with parents, children, workers, etc. We went to the children's area and signed up for the non-reader club. We can record the minutes Ava gets read to and report them to the library in order to get a monkey on the wall. It takes 4 hours to get the monkey. Then a banana gets added to the monkey for each additional 2 hours. We read to her all the time so I figure our monkey is going to be falling over from the weight of all those bananas he'll be carrying by the end of the summer. I let her choose 3 books to check out. We've already read them multiple times. One of them is long, too. We got a Curious George book in honor of our future monkey on the wall. Maybe we can name him George. Thinking about the library reminds me of the secretary at one of the schools where I used to teach. She always said "libary" when she made announcements and it irritated my art teacher friend immensely. I didn't care. I think it's funny how sometimes people pronounce words so differently than the status quo. My mom's side of the family says "warsh" instead of wash. Even down to calling the state "Warshington." My grandmother says "purty" for pretty and it actually warms my heart thinking about it. Think of that old BBC show Keeping Up Appearances. The leading lady is Mrs. Bucket but she pronounces it "Bouquet" as in flowers. Does your family have a history of mispronouncing a particular word?
