Seeing the ocean for a week reminded me of the scripture about God measuring the waters in the hollow of his hand. Powerful word imagery like that reminds me of how large and unfathomable God is. I can barely wrap my mind around the all-powerful creator that formed everything I see- from the tiny shell clad mollusks digging into the wet sand after every wave exposes them, to the bright eyed baby boy crawling at the edge of the water.
Read Isaiah 40. The scripture I referred to is there. And here is something interesting...notice the tenderness with which this all-powerful God regards us. Right before the line about measuring the water with his hands is this delicate picture:
He tends his flock like a shepherd:
He gathers the lambs in his arms
and carries them close to his heart;
he gently leads those that have young.
The entire chapter is full of God's power and God's tenderness. It is also a comparison of the everlasting God to the fast fading man. I certainly got a sense of how tiny and impermanent I am while looking out toward the vast horizon above the ocean. It is God that holds me up, who gives my life meaning, and promises an eternal home after the flower of this life withers away.
